A couple of years ago, I got a call from my middle son Clint. He lives in Redondo Beach, CA., and is 28 years old.
He said, “Dad, you always taught me to just ‘ask.’ You’re such a wise father, and I always listen to what you have to say. (Warning bells, warning bells!!! What’s he up to???)
“Dad, I know it’s not my birthday, and it’s not Christmas. But you know what? I really want a new IPhone. And I’d like to ask you to buy it for me. You taught me to ask, so I’m just asking. I want to see if this works. You won’t regret this. Besides, I’m tired of getting picked on at the playground. I want to wear the cool shoes too!”
I’m sitting there with this huge grin on my face. How can I turn him down?
“Sure Clint. How much do you need?”
So he goes to the store and we do the transaction. My son has a very nice phone. And I’m thinking I should maybe set an appointment with him so he can start teaching me how life really works!
I believe that many people are stuck in ruts because they just don’t ask. Go ahead—Ask! You never know what the answer might be. The worst you can get is a “no.” And you might just get a “yes.”
In John 16:24, Jesus says, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive and your joy will be complete.”
I love this verse. Every time I think of it, I wonder to myself, “What am I NOT asking for? What could I have if I only asked?”
I make it a practice to ask for an upgrade to first class whenever I get on a plane. Many times they say yes, with a smile on their face. If they can’t do that, I’ll ask for the exit row. (More leg room!) I almost always get that. I also ask to be upgraded at hotels. If you’re nice to them, many times they’ll just do it—at no extra charge. Suites don’t suck! I also ask for discounts, and many times get them.
So what do you need to ask for in life? Think about it. I’m sure there’s something.
I don’t know what it is. You must figure that out…
But I do know this—Don’t ask me!!!
(Enjoy this? Pass it on to a friend!)
