Let’s take a look at some great S.M.A.R.T goals that folks have shared with me and discuss what is “right” about them.
“By December 31, 2012, I am using all of this year’s vacation days.”
This sharp lady has been with the same company for quite a while, and gets four weeks of vacation per year. She never uses all the days and they don’t carry over into the next year. (Sound familiar???) So she decided to take them all this year!
First, good for her!!! She’s earned them. She works very hard and she deserves them. But here’s the best part—she showed me her monthly calendars and all of the vacation days are already written on her calendar! It’s February, and she has spring, summer, fall and winter scheduled with fun things to do. AWESOME!!!
Here’s another great example. A gentleman I know who lives near Boston sent this:
“By April 30, 2012, I am scheduling and completing two weekend bicycle trips with my sons to be ridden up the coast of Massachusetts.”
He told me that he and his two sons love to ride bikes together. His sons are in their 20’s and they don’t get to do these trips very often anymore. His sons have been on him to schedule the time, so now he’s decided to do it just that!
Here’s the best part. This goal actually covers three of the eight life categories—Physical, Family, and Fun/Recreation! He’s already begun training, and he will be spending some quality, fun time with two of the people he loves most in this world. (As a dad, I could argue that this could also cover the Spiritual part of his life too!)
Here’s another great Physical goal that a friend sent:
I am running/walking four times a week; three miles a day, to be ready to run a 5K race by April 30, 2012.
Love it!!! He’s very specific in what he’s going to do in this goal—how often and how long. Now all he has to do is schedule the times at the beginning of each week when he’s going to run and then Go For It!
Is it starting to make sense? Among other things, all of these goals are specific, measurable, have a date, realistic, and written down.
You can do this too! If you haven’t emailed me your goal yet, now’s a good time to do it! Robert@RMallon.com
Wishing you the best!
