Goals Session 9: Goal Setting Tip 9

TaDAH!!!

We’re finally here!  Over the last four posts, we’ve gone into detail about the first eight steps of our goal setting progress.  Today we will tackle the ninth and final step:

SEND WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORTS!

So what does that mean?

You may have heard of the study that Yale conducted on goals, which said that only 3% of the graduating class had specific, written goals.  Twenty years later, the 3% were earning 11 times the income of the other 97%!  And not only in income, but in all areas of life.

From my research, there is some question as to the validity of that study.  So I’d like to tell you about the results of another study I discovered which was conducted at Dominican University in San Rafael, CA.

I won’t bore you with the details of the study itself, but it involved participants who ranged in age from 23 to 72 from six different countries including the United States.  Continue reading

Goals Session 8: Goal Setting Tip 8

In our last session, we talked about the importance of setting reminders for your goals and putting them where you’ll see them on a regular basis.  Today, we’re going to learn the eighth step:

TAKE ACTION EVERY DAY!”

Once you’ve set your goal, do something with it everyday!  Why?

I want you to picture your goal as being a small, round stone on the side of a hill.  There’s no movement—it’s sitting still.  Up to now, there has been no external force acting upon it.

Let’s imagine, that one day there’s a torrential downpour that causes some of the sand or gravel underneath the stone to move.  It shifts ever so slightly.

Let’s pretend that on another day a hunter is stalking a deer and nicks the stone with his foot.  It moves a little closer to the edge of the slope.  Continue reading

Goals Session 7: Goal Setting Tip 7

In the previous three sessions, we’ve discussed the first six goal setting tips.  These will bring you great results if you’ll use them as described!

Today we’re going to tackle Step 7:

“SET REMINDERS”

After you’ve set the goal, you want to write it down.  Then, take your written goal and place it where you’re guaranteed to see it on a day-by-day basis.  Remember that what you think about, comes into your life.  Or as my pastor Kevin Myers says,

“What you think about, you look for, and what you look for you see!”

So you want to make sure that you set it up so that you automatically think about it.  This is where your reminders will come into play.  Continue reading

Celebration Post!

This is my 100th post!

I started this blog on June 1, 2011 with the encouragement of a few really good friends.  It’s hard to describe how much I’ve enjoyed this process and what it’s done for me.  I’m also very flattered by the number of people who’ve subscribed to this.  I’ve come to realize that the Internet is a very powerful tool!

The three most viewed posts so far have been:

  1. Always Faithful!
  2. Make Sure You’re Not “Washing Glasses!”
  3. Montaluce Winery.

Each of the above are links.  If you haven’t read them yet, I hope you enjoy them!

So far, I would imagine that I’ve spent between 300-400 hours in total writing time.  To date, I’ve posted close to 80,000 words, which translates into a 290-page book!  My real motivation has been to hand a little wisdom to my five kids–Joe, Clint, Brock, Callie, and Corey.  Hopefully they’ll learn from some of the mistakes I’ve made, and from some of the experiences I’ve been blessed to have enjoyed.  Continue reading

Goals Session 6: Goal Setting Tips 5-6

As we stated in Session 5, Steps 1-4 are all about actually setting the goal.  If you’ve not read that session yet, please hit the link and review those before continuing with this post.  Session 5

Let’s begin to explore what to do after you’ve set the goal by learning steps 5 and 6.

Step 5: LIST ACTIONS

Now that you’ve determined exactly what you want and you’ve written that goal down, I want you to begin thinking about how you’re going to accomplish it.

At this point, you’ll grab a piece of paper or a legal pad and begin thinking about what steps you’re going to take.  As you do this, I want you to write down anything that comes to mind.  There is no order here—just write it down.  Many times you’ll find that doing this with someone else is a good idea.  It’s true that two heads are better than one.  Continue reading
